Triathlon queen Hannah Wells is engineering an epic career
High-achiever Hannah Wells has never been satisfied conquering just one goal at a time.
From a promising sporting career in netball and volleyball, Wells switched to multi-sports in her early 20s, initially in cross country triathlon, all while studying for a PhD in biotech engineering.
After finishing third in the gruelling Coast to Coast – a one-day event across the South Island consisting of swim, mountain bike and trail running – Wells turned her sights to IRONMAN triathlon.
She took up the sport professionally while placing her post-doctoral research fellowship on hold and her sacrifices, commitment and determination were rewarded.
In just two years she became the undisputed queen of the sport, winning an astonishing eight Half Ironman crowns across Australia and New Zealand between 2019 and 2021.
Looking for a new challenge, Wells took the next step in her stellar career in 2021, contesting the New Zealand Nutri-Grain IRONMAN, comprising over 225km of swimming, cycling and running.
Despite it being her first attempt at one of the most demanding contests on the planet, Wells beat a hot field to take out first place in the full course Nutri-Grain IRONMAN.
Not one to rest on her laurels, the high achiever from the Bay of Plenty is unstoppable in her pursuit of a new personal best. What will she take on next?
